Overlays

The process I use for creating my overlay series I learned from Richard Royal in 1985 while working for him at Pilchuck Glass School. Richard would make multiple Swedish overlays, also known as “Graal.” He would pull multiple colored glass bubbles up and over a core bubble. After annealing, he would carve through the color and reheat the core. Once he picked up the core, he would blow the glass form and the carved colors would spread out into patterns. I commented to him about his process that I liked how the color rim folded like waves at the top but was then wasted on the moil of the pipe. He replied “maybe that is what you should do and make it your own.”
